Eritrea: Basic Education Statistics 2016/17
Executive summary

In the academic year 2016/17, enrolment in elementary level decreased by 1.9 percent and the decrease is observed in all Zobas. Enrolment in middle level increased by 11.6 percent and enrolment in secondary level decreased by 1.2 percent respectively as compared to previous academic year (2015/16). An increase in enrolment in middle level is observed in all Zobas and a decrease in enrolment in secondary level is observed in Anseba and Sawa.

In the academic year of 2016/17, enrolment of girls in elementary and secondary decreased by 2.6 and 0.1 percent respectively; however, there was an increase in middle level by 11.8 percent. As compared to the academic year 2015/16, in the academic year 2016/17 national enrolment of girls and boys increased by 1.5 and 1.3 percent respectively. The gross enrolment ratios of females in pre-primary, elementary, middle and secondary levels were 18.7, 99.9, 82.6 and 27.3 percent respectively.

In pre-primary education, the number of students has decreased by 0.7 percent and number of teachers has decreased by 3.7 percent. The number of schools in pre-primary has increased by 4.0 percent. The number of schools by level in elementary, middle and secondary schools increased by 1.3, 2.5 and 3.8 percent respectively. The number of teachers in elementary and middle levels increased by 3.7 and 11.8 percent respectively, but there was a decrease in secondary level by 0.8 percent.

The gross national accessibility to schooling in 2016/17 was about 18.7 percent, 99.9 percent, 82.6 percent and 27.3 percent in pre-primary, elementary, middle and secondary levels respectively.
